Knightriders
Nov. 29th, 2006 02:10 pmLast night, my apartment mate lent me Knightriders, a George Romero movie I remembered fondly from its early 80s screenings on HBO and the like. Have any of you out there seen this? It’s a movie about an SCA-style troupe that re-enacts medieval battles while mounted on motorcycles; it manages to push an astounding number of my geek buttons along the way. The SCA; Romero (although it's nowhere near as gory as his zombie movies; Stephen King has a cameo as a spectator, though); Renn Faires; Arthurian myths- on top of everything else, Pippin is almost certainly the first positive (if occasionally bitchy) gay character I ever saw in a movie. The pace drags in places, but it’s a surprisingly effective and affecting film (Ed Harris is extremely moving as Billy, the leader of the troupe who seems to be taking it all too seriously; Tom Savini, as Morgan, damn near steals the movie out from under him). If you share any of the geek interests I mentioned- or even if you’re simply a motorcycle fan- this is well worth watching.
